Total Costs = COGS + Shipping + Platform/Payment Fees

Sum of all direct product acquisition, packaging, delivery, and transactional charges.

2. Net Profit
Net Profit = Selling Price (Revenue) - Total Costs

The bottom-line dollar amount retained from each sale.

3. Profit Margin (%)
Profit Margin (%) = (Net Profit / Selling Price) × 100

The percentage of total revenue that translates into profit. Can never exceed 100%.

4. Markup (%)
Markup (%) = (Net Profit / Total Costs) × 100

The percentage added on top of your total cost basis to arrive at the retail price.

Worked Example: Private Label Wireless Earbuds

Suppose you sell private label earbuds for $120.00 each. Your manufacturing and freight cost (COGS) is $45.00, customer delivery postage is $10.00, and marketplace transaction processing is $5.00.

Input Values
Retail Selling Price:
$120.00
Cost of Goods (COGS):
$45.00
Outbound Shipping:
$10.00
Marketplace & Card Fees:
$5.00
Calculated Output
Total Cost Basis:
$60.00
Net Dollar Profit:
$60.00
Net Profit Margin:
50.00%
Cost Markup:
100.00%
Breakdown: Total costs equal $45.00 + $10.00 + $5.00 = $60.00. Net profit equals $120.00 - $60.00 = $60.00. The profit margin is ($60.00 / $120.00) × 100 = 50.00%. The markup on cost is ($60.00 / $60.00) × 100 = 100.00%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between profit margin and markup?
Profit margin is the percentage of total selling revenue that is profit: (Profit / Revenue) × 100. Markup is the percentage added on top of your total cost: (Profit / Total Cost) × 100. While margin can never exceed 100% in conventional sales, markup can be higher than 100%.
What should be included in Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)?
COGS includes the manufacturing or wholesale acquisition cost of the product, packaging, barcode labels, and freight shipping to your fulfillment warehouse. Operating expenses, ad spend, and transaction fees are treated as additional fees.
What is a healthy profit margin for an e-commerce store?
For private label and DTC e-commerce, a healthy net margin typically sits between 15% and 30%. Dropshipping margins are often tighter (10% to 20%), whereas high-margin niche items or digital goods can achieve 40% or more.
Can profit margin be negative?
Yes. If your combined product cost, shipping, and platform fees exceed your selling price, your net profit and margin become negative, indicating a per-unit loss.
